Borderlands really has to push itself with the visual effects to make it truly stand out against it's predecessors in its own series. That said, we've really reached a limit with how nice we can make things like celshading, etc. Granted, Twilight Princess is my all-time favorite Zelda game, but before their HD Re-released Windwaker's toonshaded art style honestly did age better than Twilight Prindcess'. Look at the original Windaker versus the original Twilight Princess. However, when you go for something with a little bit more creative style over photorealism, your game automatically ages much better. And as such, anything that goes for photorealism needs to absolutely push its graphics to the maximum, or else it runs the risk of falling into the uncanny valley. While things can look great in the moment with our current graphics technology, as soon as something is better, we see the downfalls of the previous technology. ANYTHING- that goes for photorealism in its art style runs the risk of not aging very well.
